Nokia X6 check

Nokia X6: An'ensemble

The persistence of manufacturers when it comes to touchscreen phones mobile phone should be applauded.

It might be that only a few - including HTC, Apple and Palm - have really broken the marriage of hardware and software - but that has not stopped everyone is trying to achieve the same success. Nokia's own efforts have been hit and miss.

The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is not without its good points, but all the touchscreen phones, Nokia had hitherto resistive screens.

Among other things, this means they all came with pens fashioned, and does not work correctly when you hit the screen with more than one finger. This means reduced typing speed, and user actions that are so intuitive about other phones - pinch to zoom on the iPhone, for example - were not available.

Nokia has heard complaints from its customers.

The X6 looks like a slider phone traditional - 13.8 mm thick it certainly seems like it could accommodate a physical keyboard. However, there is virtually no button is the touch screen of 3.2 inches is capacitive, making it theoretically redundant physical keyboard.

There is a wealth of features yet. A huge 32GB internal storage and an FM radio makes it tempting for entertainment, even before considering Nokia Comes With intriguing music service.

Although the device has received the kind of attention you do not see on cheaper models - a sensor behind a 5MP Carl Zeiss optics X6 provides a lot of luster.

But the touchscreen is a gimmick? The S60 operating system has a number of critics, and just because a phone ticks all the right boxes on a specification sheet does not necessarily mean that it will please its users.

Nokia X6: Interface

nokia x6

Anyone who used a Nokia phone in recent years knows what to expect from Symbian S60 5th Edition.

Be touchscreen only and (hopefully) Stylus-free, all the buttons on screen are significantly sized for fingers, and the screen itself is excellent.

With its 3.5-inch diagonal, you could be forgiven for thinking he is bigger than the iPhone 3.2-inch screen, but the reality is that the different aspect ratio - 16:9 for the iPhone 1 , 5:1 - meaning you actually get the goods Other phone from Apple or HTC Hero With which hand the iPhone screen size and resolution.

homescreen

However, the X6 Nokia is higher resolution than either, with its 640 x 360 screen. Presumably with his tongue in his cheek, Nokia describes the show in HD, but you should not be fooled into thinking that you can shoehorn a true HD video on it.

Accurate screen

The screen of May is not huge, but it's certainly promising. Photos and videos look great on the glossy display, and the sensor works well, adjusting screen brightness according to your environment.

It is also very specific when it comes to controls at your fingertips, but it seems a pity that Nokia has not fully used the capacitive screen - Pinch to zoom in such a natural thing to feel on other phones -- is absent.

To zoom in, you have to double on the screen. The X6 also gives a little buzz of the haptic feedback whenever you touch the screen, which can indicate that you have operated successfully if you can not see the button behind your finger

dialler..

With the screen the main way to make the X6 doing things, there are only a few other buttons. Dial and hang up buttons bookend the main menu button, while the right edge houses a volume control, the trigger and a sliding switch that locks and unlocks the phone.

There is an extra touch, almost imperceptible sensitive button in the top right of the screen, what happens when you hit a small menu that gives you quick access to your photos, music, videos and the Internet.

The interface is not without its caprices, though. For example, some menu items are made by the touch of a finger. Others require a press of a finger to put an option, and a second tap to activate. This inconsistency means that it can be difficult to tell when the X6 is working on launching an application, or wait quietly for you to confirm your choice.

office

And you will see that his work to launch an application much. We met many performance problems with our review unit.

After synchronization of calendar, contacts and all messages with it the launch of contacts the front page has an age, while other applications often launched impressively fast. This is another inconsistency that may make the X6 frustrating to use. The 434MHz processor should be able to keep pace.

Nokia Ovi magazine is included and you can install applications and games, although we remain underwhelmed by the size of the supply store. More useful service offers calendar and email utilities for those who do not.

Nokia X6: The Calling, Messaging and Iinternet
Calls and Messaging

There are many more interesting things to do with the X6 than simply calling people, but fortunately the actual dialing interface is simple to use and we had no problems with call quality. Similarly, the bundled earphones are reasonable, and for those who do not like the 3.5mm headphone jack on top of the phone is a definite bonus.

Messaging

The high resolution screen could be perfect for watching the odd video and view photos, but the one area that makes life difficult is the creation of messages. With the phone held up (aka in portrait mode), you are presented with T9 predictive text keypad.

messaging

This is all well and good if you just another candybar style phone, but the frequent emailers will prefer the full QWERTY keyboard that is presented when you hold the phone on its side.

The accuracy is certainly good - the touch screen capacitive means you do not need to lift a finger to the screen before putting another down, and you'll achieve much higher speeds on the touchscreen than any of Nokia's previous efforts.

Indeed, with a little practice, it is easy to reach virtually the same speed as the X6 on a phone with a physical keyboard. The dictionary in Council is not as clever as that of the iPhone, so you must be a little more careful when typing, but overall it works well.

contacts

The only downside, the keyboard is relatively close to the screen - the 16:9 aspect ratio and relatively high resolution could make the X6 good for watching movies, but it means less space for buttons and messaging window. While this may feel a little cramped, especially in the early days.

Internet

It is not surprising that the browser offers "full" internet, trying to render pages the same as on a desktop PC. It generally works well - the accelerometer is reliable when it comes to turning pages, and be prompted to save usernames and passwords each time you enter a new site is very convenient.

Again, however, we noticed some performance constraints. On large pages with multiple images - or worse, held elements Flash - The browser would often freeze, leaving us unable to drag the page around, or even enter a new address.

We never needed to reset the phone - hang up button is normally sufficient for us back to the main menu - but it is annoying that the X6 offers features, it does not seem fast enough to function properly.

Nokia X6: Camera

nokia x6 camera

The 5MP camera is very good indeed. A pair of LEDs allow you to take pictures in low light, and our test images show good detail resolution and a high degree of color accuracy.

nokia x6

This is a fairly well balanced exposure - note the absence of chromatic aberration on high contrast leaves behind the phone box.

nokia x6

Again, a good exposure with a smooth, deep sky, although the camera has trouble resolving many details in the shadows.

nokia x6

The camera struggled a bit here. Although the exhibition is more or less right, the berries themselves and other highlights in the image have been blown

nokia x6

A difficult to get right - a wide range of brightness and the X6 has almost the right track, wandering to correctly present home rather than trying to save a lot of detail in the shadows.

Nokia X6: The Media and Driver element

nokia x6

The X6 syncs perfectly with Windows Media Player, and have had no difficulty in transferring some DivX files without having to view the folder structure of the phone in hand, and this also applies to music.

Flipping between the music was beautiful exchange of video interface proved more difficult - weak performance of the X6 is to the fore again here.

There are some other nice features. DJ Playlist offers four sliders, which represents happiness, love, anger and peace, and the idea is to drag them around to suit your mood to create a playlist for you.

nokia x6

Songs profile may take some time and requires an Internet connection, and takes more time if your music is not named correctly. The system itself is a bit hit and miss.

Telling the X6 we were in the mood for music Downbeat led to a playlist containing (rightly) a handful of tracks AIM and a few death Cab for Cutie songs, but also included the distinctly un-chilled Whatz Ya Phone Number by 2pac.

Battery

The 1320 mAh battery in Nokia was reliable while we were on the phone. We made some phone calls, browsed the Internet via Wi-Fi, and watched some videos, and the X6 lasted approximately 30 hours of the Charger, which is quite respectable.

nokia x6

Nokia claims a standby time GSM up to 17 days, which is impressive, but the number of features offered by the X6 means that you have little chance to leave him alone if you find yourself with a moment of rest. Time claimed music playback of 35 hours is the iPod touch-strokes.

Organizer

The X6 is compatible with Nokia's ActiveSync application that gives you access to an Exchange server (and Google Apps), allowing you to use your calendar, contacts and e-mail in native applications of the X6. Is frustrating, the timetable has not shortcut on the home screen of the X6, although this default can be changed in the Settings menu of the phone.

nokia x6

Otherwise, the default applications X6 are rather thin on the ground. There is no stopwatch included by default, and our review unit did not even come with a trial version of Quickoffice, giving you no easy way to open Word documents received as attachments, for example.

Connectivity

nokia x6

Software Nokia PC Suite is good compatible with the X6, and offers a convenient way to synchronize local information such as appointments and emails. And if you do not use Media Player to synchronize music and video, PC Suite gives you the opportunity, and transcoding of content, he did not want to work on your phone.

Nokia X6: Verdict

nokia x6

The X6 Nokia is more beautiful on paper than it is in real life. The capacitive screen and 32 GB of internal memory should ensure that it's great for multimedia, while the flexible system Symbian operating allows great flexibility.

It is undeniably well made, and that certain fundamental characteristics, such as seizure of messages work better on this device than they have on any Nokia touch another. However, we encountered problems of performance each day, we used the X6.

Sometimes they appeared in the absence of performance problems had existed before, and disappeared as quickly - unpredictability equally frustrating that the slow speed.

We liked:

The screen is superb, and the browser, which lets you view pages on their desktop that designers intended, works well. The input message - finally - works well on screen, and frequent texters will have no problem to reach supersonic speeds.

The keyboard is excellent. It is a good phone as media. There are masses of storage, which is convenient for those who have a long drive and want something to keep them entertained, and features such as DJ Playlist, although imperfect, are nice additions.

We did not like:

Our main problem with the X6 is its performance. We were often left to guess if our key was recognized, and sometimes typing a button again resulted in unpredictable behavior.

We experienced slow performance in most areas, but particularly when you view the large web pages, loading a book full of contacts, and watch videos.

The extra second, or occasionally encountered between tapping an icon and something that can be frustrating. The way the interface sometimes requires a double tap can also be annoying, at least while you're still learning the ropes.

The screen, although bright and sharp, feels a little tight at times. Widescreen videos, for example, often feel like they could use an extra half-inch vertical.

And while we love the keyboard on the screen, in general, it is undeniable that the keys feel a little on the small side, while the built-in dictionary is often not enough clever enough considering the slightly higher error on a virtual keyboard.
